Languages

Image
How do humans communicate with each other? We use language!!! Whether it's verbal or physical language we all use it. Language however has been developed due to the geography of the area in which the inhabitants live in. Let's start off with the uniquely amazing language of the Gomeran people of La Gomero, in the Canary islands. Here in this small island of La Gomero the language here is nothing like you've ever heard. Due to the topography of this island the locals have developed a language of whistling!!! La Gomero is known for having deep, long ravines and narrow canyons and so if the locals needed to contact each other their voices couldn't reach the distance needed, so they learned how to communicate using whistles (Silbo Gomero). Thanks to La Gomero's harsh topography this truly unique language has occurred. Credit: YOUTUBE

Dance

Image
Now, a lot of people wouldn't imagine that dance would be related with geography but infact, most dances have been developed to show history, to tell stories and those stories also express the geography of the surrounding area. you still mightn't be convinced but stick around and you'll begin to see where I'm coming from... Lets start off with the dance that most of us know and a must know for all of those rugby fans. It's a war cry and a fierce one in fact. It's of course; the Haka. For those of you who don't know what the Haka is, its a Maori war cry and It's typically preformed at the start of every rugby match by the New Zealand rugby squad. in the past it was displayed during the battles of the Maori. The Haka has been developed due to the area of which the Kiwis live and in the past the Maori lived. This means that the land that the Maori onced inhabited has now new inhabitants and due to the land, it has connected the people and brought them bac

Food

Image
Food is one of a human's basic needs. Sadly there are some people in this world who are deprived of this necessity, but that's a blog for another day. Food however comes in different shapes, tastes and forms from all over this world. The food of different cultures has (at it's roots) been developed due to the geography of the surrounding area or/and the influences of other cultures, All I'm going to discuss today is how food has become the food we know and love it as today due to the geography of where the food has been developed. The national dish of Bhutan is Ema Datshi (a mixture of rice, chilli's and cheese made from yak milk) the reason Ema datshi was created was because it used the resources (ingredients) of the local area and these ingredients have become developed due to the geography of the land. Let me explain; yaks are animals which are very suited to living at high altitude and on rocky terrain so compared to regular cows it makes sense for the Bhutan

Settlements

People settle in areas where the resources they need are easily accessible. Let's take tribes living in the River Amazon's basin. They would choose where to settle depending on the following factors in relation to the easy of accessibility to these resources; rivers for food/water, fertile soil for growing crops or elevated ground for defensive observation's (to warn the tribe's members of attacks from neighbouring tribes or predators) and a vantage point of the surrounding area. Compare this to the reasons people would settle in a particular area of a developed country. I'll use Ireland as the example for this. In Ireland people would settle near valued services. These services could include; shopping areas, open space for recreation and in a short commute's distance to their work place. Now lets move over to the Maasai tribes of Tanzania. The Maasai are desert nomads (people who don't have a fixed accommodation) who migrate around Tanzania's sands. Wh
